The Hong Kong International Computational Olympiad (HKICO) is an annual competition focusing on computational thinking and programming skills. It includes modern programming languages such as Scratch, Blockly, and Python. The event is supervised by the National University of Singapore (NUS), ensuring its academic rigor and offering students a challenging, skill-building experience in coding and problem-solving.

How many questions are there, and how long is the heat test?

The test consists of 20 MCQs to be solved in 60 minutes for all grade levels.

What is the test format and language?

The test is online, and it’s in English questions.

Is the mini-project mandatory?

No, the mini-project is entirely optional.

What are the awards?

The top 8% receive a Gold medal, the next 12% receive Silver, and the next 15% receive Bronze. All other participants receive an Achiever Medal.

Are there any special awards?

Yes, a Perfect Scorer receives a trophy, and the Champion, First Runner-Up, and Second Runner-Up receive trophies. In addition, the Perfect Scorer will receive a 50% discount on the international round fee, and the Champion will receive a 25% discount.

What happens in the case of a tie between two or more perfect scorers or champions?

In the event of a tie, the younger participant, based on the date of birth, will be ranked higher.

What is the fee for the international rounds?

The international round fee is SAR 3,490. International Fees include training sessions, accommodation, awarding ceremony, city tours, meals, and transportation for five days.

Does the fee include airfare?

No, participants and their parents or companions, if any, need to purchase airline tickets separately.

Which grade levels can participate in the Final Round?

Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalists from Grades 3 to 12 can participate.

Can parents travel with the students for the international rounds?

Yes, students in Grades 3-7 must be accompanied by a parent. For students in Grades 8-11, a parent’s presence is optional.
