The Hong Kong International Science Olympiad (HKISO) is a premier international science competition for students in Grades 3–12. It provides a global platform that nurtures critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and problem-solving skills, while encouraging teamwork and cultural exchange among young learners.

The journey begins with the National Round, an online exam consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. These questions span physics, chemistry, biology, and integrated science, designed to challenge students’ understanding and application of concepts.

Top achievers advance to the International Round, where participants face 24 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. This stage tests deeper knowledge and reasoning, awarding distinctions ranging from Honorable Mention to Gold.

Register for the National Round

    Each grade level has a clear syllabus of topics. Review carefully—they are key to preparing for the challenge.

  3. Practice with Resources

    Your account includes access to past papers for your grade. Use them to build confidence and sharpen your skills.

  4. Review Your Performance

    Practice tests help you measure your progress before the real event. They give you confidence and show you where you need to improve.

  5. Compete in the National Round

    Take the official online test and prove your science ability. This stage decides who qualifies for the HKISO Global Round.

  6. Advance to the Global Finals

    Top achievers qualify for the Global Round in Singapore. There, finalists compete internationally and celebrate their success with awards.

HKISO is open to students from Grade 3 to Grade 12. Each grade competes with a syllabus designed for their level in science subjects.

02. What domains are tested in HKISO?

The Olympiad focuses on science knowledge and reasoning, covering Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Integrated Science. Questions are designed for each grade level to test both conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills.

03. How is HKISO structured?

HKISO has two rounds: the National Round (online) and the International Round (in-person, hosted in Singapore).

04. How long is the test and how many questions are there?

  • National Round: 20 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes

  • Correct answers: +2 points

  • Incorrect answers: –1 point

06. What awards are given?

Participants are honored with a wide range of recognitions, including Champion, 1st and 2nd Runner-up trophies, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards with medals and certificates, as well as Merit and Participation Certificates — ensuring every student’s achievement is celebrated.

 

07. What happens in the Global Round?

The International Round is held in Singapore, co-organized with the National University of Singapore (NUS). Students compete with peers from around the world, experience hands-on STEM education, and engage in cultural and academic exchange activitiesز

08. Do winners get scholarships?

Top achievers from the Senior Secondary category (Grades 11–12) may gain opportunities for scholarship discounts or special academic benefits through partnerships with selected institutions during the International Round.

09. How do I register for HKISO?

Registration is done through Contest Bag at www.contestbag.com. You can choose to register for the National Round and later for the Global Round if you qualify.

 

10. When does HKISO take place?

For 2025–2026, the National Round is on 4 April 2026, and the International Round will be held in mid-June 2026 in Singapore.
