Debate Info

Learn More About the Debate Part

The Questions below should help you learn more about how the debate showcase works in the regional round

  • 1. What is the TeenEagle Debate Challenge?

The TeenEagle Debate Challenge is a team-based speaking competition where students debate topics related to their competition resources. Teams follow a condensed version of the Oxford Union debate format, designed to suit students’ age levels and the competition schedule.

  • 2. How are debate teams formed?

Teams consist of three students and are formed on the day of the competition. Each team works together throughout the debate process and preparation time.

  • 3. How are debate topics and sides decided?

Debate topics are selected randomly from an approved topic pool. A coin toss determines whether a team will argue for or against the topic. Once assigned, topics and sides cannot be changed.

  • 4. How much preparation time do teams get?

Teams are given 30 minutes to prepare their arguments together before the debate begins. During this time, students organize their ideas and decide who will present each section.

  • 5. How is the debate structured?

    Each debate includes three sections:

    • Introductory remarks and stance

    • Rebuttal

    • Closing arguments

Each team member delivers one section only, and teams alternate speaking turns following strict time rules.

  • 6. How long does each student speak?

Speaking time depends on the TeenEagle level:

    • TeenEagle 1: 60–90 seconds per speaker

    • TeenEagle 2 & 3: 90–120 seconds per speaker

There is a 1-minute break between sections for note-taking.

  • 7. How is the Debate Challenge scored?

Debate scoring is individual, not team-based. Each student is scored separately using the debate rubric, and the average score of two debates forms the final debate score for the participant.

  • 8. Are notes or internet access allowed during the debate?

Students may only write notes during the official debate break times. Internet access is strictly not allowed, and discussion is limited to team members only during breaks.

  • 9. What are the rules for speeches and presentation?

    Speeches must:

    • Stay on the assigned topic

    • Follow the time limits

    • Not be read directly from notes

Reading a speech results in a negative grade. Costumes, props, and inappropriate symbols are not allowed, and attire rules apply to all participants.

  • 10. What is the Debate Showcase, and how are students selected?

The Debate Showcase is a final on-stage event where top debate scorers from six different countries compete in front of an audience. It does not affect overall scores, but makes participants eligible for additional prizes. Teams receive 1 hour of preparation time before the showcase debates.

A NEW STEP IN SHOWING YOUR ENGLISH MASTERY

The TeenEagle Regional is more than a test.

1. Knowledge Assessment

Students take part in a comprehensive, in-person written exam that measures their understanding of the competition sources: the story, the movie, and the vocabulary list. The assessment includes multiple-choice, true/false, and fill-in-the-blank questions and is conducted in a supervised, paper-based format.

2. Debate Challenge

Participants engage in the Debate Challenge, designed to develop persuasion, critical thinking, idea organization, and attentive listening skills. Students are divided into small groups and take part in a structured, Oxford-style debate on topics related to the story or film, with individual evaluation contributing to the final score.

3. Spelling Bee Showcase & Awards

On the second day, selected top-performing students participate in the Spelling Bee Showcase, held live on stage. This is followed by the official awarding ceremony, where students are recognized with medals, certificates, trophies, and special awards, celebrating their achievements in the Regional Round.
